Natural Flea and Tick Prevention for Pets
Fleas and ticks can be annoying for both your pets and your home. Once they’ve made their way into your home, they can be difficult to get rid of. Not only are they a nuisance but they carry diseases that pose animal and human health risks. However, there are natural, safe and effective ways to get rid of fleas and ticks. Below you will find safe and natural flea and tick prevention for your pets and your home:
1. DIY flea baths
DIY flea baths are easy to make at home and they work amazingly well. This DIY flea bath is guaranteed to kill fleas with three simple ingredients you probably already have in your pantry.
Those three ingredients include:
- ½ cup of water
- ¼ cup of distilled white vinegar
- ¼ cup of dish soap
2. Essential oils
There are many benefits to using essential oils when combating fleas and ticks. However, some essential oils can be toxic to your pets, so it is important to speak with your Vet before using any essential oils. The following oils are great for natural flea and tick prevention:
- Lavender (5-10 drops)
- Rosemary (5-8 drops)
- Peppermint (1-2 drops)
- Lemongrass (5 drops)
- Cedar (2-3 drops)
- Citronella (15 drops)
- Eucalyptus Oil (3 drops)
The essential oils listed above can be added to shampoo and used for your pets during bath time. You can also add to water in a spray bottle and spray throughout your home, especially your carpet and furniture. There are many other flea and tick deterrents and this next one works exceptionally well.
3. DIY flea traps
This DIY trap is most effective for areas of your home with the highest population of fleas. You’ll want to fill up a pan with soapy water and place it on the floor. Fleas are typically drawn to heat especially the heat of a lamp. Because of this you’ll want to shine the lamp directly over the water. If you stand near by and watch, you’ll see the fleas jump into the light, only to fall into the soapy water. The soap in the water causes the fleas to die because they can not jump out of the soapy water. Give this DIY trap a try for yourself, I know you will be happy with the results.
Practicing use of regular prevention using a natural method will not only reduce the population of fleas and ticks on your pet and in your home but is also environmentally friendly. With the implementation of these natural flea and tick deterrents both you and your pets can enjoy even more fun moments in nature.
